Hernias are something that not many people think they will have or even know that they may have. This is because most of the time they will not cause the person any amount of pain. When in the early stage you may only experience a slight discomfort that will go away quickly.

There are three main types of hernias and the stages at which they progress. It is important that people understand what type of hernias they have. This will let them know the proper way to treat it and what could be causing it.

Reducible Hernia

When it is in the early stage it is usually considered to be a reducible hernia. This means that people can easily push the mass back inside where it came from. This is not a way to treat it and coughing, bending over, or any type of straining will push it back out again. However, it does help to alleviate some of the discomfort.

Irreducible Hernia

There are some masses that cannot be pushed back inside no matter how hard you might try. These are irreducible and could be because they are too large or something is blocking its way. This will make someone very uncomfortable and for some can cause a certain amount of pain. People with this type will usually try to repair the problem with surgery when a spot is open for them.

Strangulated Hernia

This is the worst type of hernia that anyone can have. The reason doctors like to repair the hernia when it is diagnosed is because it can turn into this. When this happens the hernia is tangled with another intestine in the body and is cutting off its blood supply. This can cause an infection, gangrene, and will kill the intestine. It can also cause the person great pain. This is something that must be treated right away because it only take a few hours for the intestine to die.

There are many different types of hernias that can develop in certain areas of the body. The most common is the abdominal hernia – but that is not the only one we have to worry about. Women are more prone to having a femoral hernia when compared to men because of how their bodies work.

In order to know the best way to treat a femoral hernia you must be able to learn how to identify the symptoms. These will give you a clue as to what could be wrong with your body and push you into making an appointment with your doctor. The most common symptoms include:

Pregnancy

Coughing

Straining while urinating or bowel movements

Lifting large and heavy items

Straining muscles during physical activities

Each of these can push the contents into the femoral canal causing the hernia. For many people this may not cause any pain – but a slight discomfort. However, there are others who will experience varying levels of pain. When the contents are pushed into the canal it will cause a mass to form that can be seen in the groin or the inner thigh.

If you experience any of these symptoms you should speak with your doctor so that they can diagnose the problem and make sure it is not something else. They will need to feel for the mass and do a GP exam on you. Most will do this when you are coughing, sitting up, or standing.

Most doctors will suggest that you have the femoral hernia treated with surgery as soon as you can. This will help to alleviate any pain or discomfort and keep it from becoming worse. You do not want to let it grow larger and become a strangulated hernia. These are deadly and must be treated with surgery immediately.

A hernia is a condition that many people are forced to go through. Although it rarely causes pain they can become deadly when they become strangulated. For some people it might be months or even years before they realize that they have been experiencing symptoms of a hernia.

It is important to know how to identify it so you can keep it under control and understand what you can do to treat it. One of the biggest reasons of a hernia is weight gain. Obesity can cause hernias because of the amount of pressure that is being pushed on parts of the body.

Another common cause of hernias is heavy lifting. People who have a tendency to lift large and heavy items on a constant basis should wear the proper support in order to avoid this problem. Without this support they are placing too much pressure on weak muscles in their bodies – causing the hernia to form.

Any type of straining can also place pressure on weak muscles and cause bulges in certain areas. This strain can be coming from an excessive amount of coughing and straining during bowel movements. When coughing it is best to keep a pillow in front of you that will help to support your stomach. In order to reduce the straining during bowel or urination movements you should eat a lot of fiber and drinks lots of water.

There are other medical conditions such as ascites – this is when large amounts of fluid has backed up in the abdominal cavity – that can cause hernia symptoms. This condition will weaken the muscles in the abdominal wall and increase your risk. It can also be a leading factor to hepatitis, congestive heart failure, and liver cancer.

Hernias are one of the many medical problems that can occur when we least expect it. They do not always pose a danger and in some cases are nothing but an annoyance to people. They are made when contents of the stomach are being pushed out through a weak area in the abdominal wall.

It can create an uncomfortable feeling and over time a bulge can appear when the person is sitting or standing in a certain position. But it causes little to no pain – which makes it easy for the person to treat. There are surgeries that can be used – which will help to remove them or you can use something that is easier and more affordable.

The hernia belt is a special garment that was created to apply pressure to the abdominal hernia. For some people it can help to reduce pain and to force the bulge back inside where it belongs. When worn every day it can help to reduce the chance that it can become complicated. Keep in mind that only surgery can treat it. This is merely designed to control it.

The belt has been built to push the tissue that is falling out and force it back inside of the abdomen. Doctors may urge the patient to wear it in order to keep it at bay till they have the surgery repair or even to prevent a surgery. It will allow the person to feel more comfortable and to do normal things.

You can purchase one of these hernia belts at a local drug store or you can obtain one through your doctor’s office. They will help to recommend a brand and the type that you should be using. There are some that come available with removable padding that will increase or decrease the pressure used to push it back inside.

Hernias are a condition that many people are afraid to have – but in reality they can be fairly easy to handle. The majority of hernias do not cause people any type of pain and only a slight discomfort. This discomfort is caused by the bulge that protrudes from the area in which it is located in.

The only time that people need to worry about this condition is when it has become strangulated. This is a serious problem and will cause the person pain. It also requires the need for surgery in order to remove it and to repair the area that it has broken through. One of the most common hernia repair surgeries that doctors will use is laparoscopic surgery.

This procedure – also known as minimally invasive surgery – is unique when compared to other types of procedures because it uses a video camera and very thin tools. During the surgery the surgeon will make small cuts and then place plastic tubes through these holes. The camera and the tools being used are pushed through the tubes.

The surgeon will use the camera to get a better view of each of the organs that are in the stomach. During the average surgery in which the surgeon will make larger cuts in the patient they will not have a clear view into their stomach. With the camera they are given a much clearer view and are given a chance to be more accurate.

There are many benefits to using a laparoscopic surgery instead of the usual types. It allows for a faster recovery period – which means that you will spend less time in the hospital. The cuts are much smaller – which means that the scars will barely be noticed. Also the scarring inside of the body will be very small and this can help to avoid future problems.

There are many types of hernias that people may have to deal with and that can occur within the stomach, belly button, and groin. Some are caused because of a previous surgical procedure while others might have formed when a person was born and developed over time. One of the most common type of hernia is the abdominal hernia.

This is caused when the intestines are pushing through a weak area in the wall of the abdomen that is weak. There are many things that could have weakened the stomach wall – but it is not always know to many people that they have one at all. Because most hernias do not cause any pain the only way that the person will know that they have one is when they feel a slight ache in their stomach or see a bulge that should not be there.

The usual things that will cause the ache or make the bulge more noticeable is prolonged period of sitting or standing, pain when coughing or lifting heavy objects, or pain while straining during bowel movements. Those who do experience pain might experience a simple dull throb or a sharp pain that will increase when pressure is placed on the abdomen.

It is important that you make an appointment with your doctor immediately so that they are able to determine what it is and how it should be treated. The treatment for abdominal hernias can be very simple as long as it is not strangulated. Once the hernia is strangulated it becomes a serious matter that requires surgery in order for it to be removed and the abdominal wall fixed.

If it is not painful and only creates a bulge you can treat it by wearing certain types of ’girdles’ that will keep the hernia pushed in. You might also be able to push it back in yourself from time to time. However, if you would rather remove the abdominal hernia then you can speak with you doctor and ask them the best procedure to use.

A ventral hernia will happen when the contents located within the abdominal cavity will push through and try to force its way through the abdominal wall. Usually the tissues and the muscles that line up with the cavity are there to hold everything inside. This type of hernia is usually caused when there is a defect in the wall caused by a surgical procedure.

The symptoms that are associated with a ventral hernia will depend on how large or small it is. Many hernias can be very noticeable when it sticks out in the abdomen. This protrusion may be small and hardly able to be noticed by anyone. Or it might be quite large and cause someone to be very uncomfortable.

It is common for this hernia to not cause any symptoms at all. Certain people are able to push it back inside through the break in the abdominal wall. However, while this might reduce the size and look it will not take care of the problem completely.

There are times when it may not be able to be pushed back inside. This is classified under an incarcerated hernia and can induce symptoms of nausea, vomiting, pain, and can make it hard to pass bowel movements.

At time the blood that is being carried to the protrusion will cease. This causes the intestine to die. When this happens it is then classified as a strangulated hernia. You never want this to happen because it can be extremely painful and cause the whole abdomen to be tender and induce symptoms of pain, fever, chills, and vomiting.

As we stated earlier when the problem is small it can be taken care of by simply pushing it back inside. One thing that can help with this is to wear a supportive belt. When the hernia is larger the doctor may have to use surgery in order to repair the area in the abdomen that is weak. Surgery is also the last recourse when it has become strangulated and it must be done at once.

There are many different types of hernias that people can have and each one is considered to be quite uncomfortable and even painful at times. There are different methods of repairing them and one popular method was the kugel mesh patch. However, this proved to be a mistake that many doctors made and was soon to have known side effects that would make the problem worse rather then better.

When people started noticing the side effects that were obviously being caused by the patch the Food and Drug Administration began to recall them to make sure that no more people suffered. The part of the patch that does not work is called the ‘memory recoil ring’. This would break and when this happened it would cause severe side effects.

Bowel Obstruction

This problem is a complete or partial blockage of the intestines. There are many things that can cause this which include hernias, tumors, medications, gallstones, scar tissue, and also foreign objects within the body like the patch. This condition can cause the person intense abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. It is goes untreated it can cause bowel perforation, gangrene, and an infection.

Chronic Enteric Fistulas

This is a connection that is created between the two sections of the intestine. The most common symptom is severe abdominal pain – but there are a few who suffer more serious symptoms. It is possible for the opening of the fistula to close while the others are opened up. When this happens it can cause the contents of the bowel to accumulate to large amounts. This can create an infections that can travel into the blood stream.

Bowel Perforation

When there is an opening in the intestinal wall everything that is being held inside will be pushed into the abdominal cavity. This condition can cause severe abdominal pain, high fever, and vomiting. When it is not treated it can cause sepsis and blood infection that can be potentially fatal. Reports have shown that around seven patients that have used the kugel mesh patch have suffered from this condition.

A hiatal hernia is considered by health experts to be an anatomical abnormality. This abnormality causes sections of the stomach to push through the person’s diaphragm and up through the chest. These are one of the rarest forms of hernias that a person can have.

According to health research close to half of the people who suffer from these types of hernias will have not symptoms. The other half of people that do have hiatal hernia symptoms will experience heartburn more then anything else. This can be a painful symptom – which can be avoided if the person was to eat the right foods that would help to control it.

The opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus that is linked to the stomach is considered to be an added sphincter that is located under the lower section of the esophagus. In normal patients with no problems the hiatus as well as the lower sphincter of the esophageal will line up next to each other. They work together to keep the contents in the stomach from traveling back up the esophagus.

However, the hiatal hernia will weaken that connection and eventually will cause the acid reflux problems. Many people can confuse a hiatal hernia with GERD because both problems can cause acid reflux.

Eating Tips

Do not eat anything two hours before you go to bed

Try to eat smaller meal more often throughout the day

After you eat sit up for around one hour

Do not bend over right after eating a meal

Stay away from alcohol

Stay away from food that can cause acid reflux

It is true that there are many foods – which can cause the acid reflux. These need to be avoided as best you can and replaced with something healthier for your body. You should speak with your doctor to learn what foods are best to eat and what to avoid. They will provide you with a full list and help you to make the healthiest hiatal hernia diet for your body.

Inguinal (groin) hernia: it is made of two sub types: direct and indirect. Both occur in the groin area above the inguinal crease, but they have slightly different origins. Both of these types of hernias can similarly appear as a bulge in the inguinal area. Indirect inguinal hernia follows the pathway that the testicles made during prebirth development. It descends from the abdomen into the scrotum. This pathway normally closes before birth but may remain a possible place for a hernia. Sometimes the hernia sac may protrude into the scrotum. An indirect inguinal hernia may occur at any age. Direct inguinal hernia occurs slightly to the inside of the site of the indirect hernia, in a place where the abdominal wall is naturally slightly thinner. It rarely will protrude into the scrotum. Unlike the indirect hernia, which can occur at any age, the direct hernia tends to occur in the middle-aged and elderly because their abdominal walls weaken as they age.

Femoral hernia: The femoral canal is the path through which the femoral artery, vein, and nerve leave the abdominal cavity to enter the thigh. Although normally a tight space, sometimes it becomes large enough to allow abdominal contents (usually intestine) into the canal. A femoral hernia causes a bulge just below the inguinal crease in roughly the mid-thigh area. Usually occurring in women, femoral hernias are particularly at risk of becoming irreducible and strangulated.

Umbilical hernia: this is often called the navel hernia. These common hernias (10-30%) are often noted at birth as a protrusion at the bellybutton (the umbilicus). This is caused when an opening in the abdominal wall, which normally closes before birth, doesn’t close completely. If small (less than half an inch) this type of hernia usually closes gradually by age 2. Larger hernias and those that do not close by them usually require surgery at age 2-4 years. Even if the area is closed at birth, umbilical hernias can appear later in life because this spot may remain a weaker place in the abdominal wall. Umbilical hernias can appear later in life or in women who are having or have had children.

Incisional hernia: Abdominal surgery causes a flaw in the abdominal wall. This flaw can create an area of weakness where a hernia may develop. This occurs after 2-10% of all abdominal surgeries, although some people are more at risk. Even after surgical repair, incisional hernias may return.

Epigastric hernia: Occurring between the navel and the lower part of the rib cage in the midline of the abdomen, epigastric hernias are composed usually of fatty tissue and rarely contain intestine. Formed in an area of relative weakness of the abdominal wall, these hernias are often painless and unable to be pushed back into the abdomen when first discovered.
