Face acne scars are a difficult thing for many people to deal with. For many people they can be large scars that encompass the majority of the face. This can cause them to be self conscious and will limit how much they try to socialize with other people.

There are many different face acne scar treatments available that could help to diminish or to remove the acne scars. These treatments each have their own risks and must be discussed thoroughly with a dermatologist before you choose which to use. Some treatments are more expensive than others and because they are cosmetic they are usually not covered by insurance companies.

Microdermabrasion

This treatment is used to repair the facial skin that is damaged by acne scars and the sun. During this procedure the surgeon will use a special device to spray miniscule crystals across the patient’s face. During this time they will also be combining gentle abrasion suction to help get rid of the dead layers of the skin’s surface.

Laser Resurfacing Treatments

During these treatments the surgeon use a high energy beam of light on the affected areas of the skin. These lasers will work to destroy the top layers of the skin. This is one of the more popular face acne treatments – but it is also one of the more expensive. There are side effects to this treatment that you should talk about with your doctor.

Subcision

Subcision is a type of treatment used only for atrophic acne scarring. The surgeon will use local anesthesia so that you will not feel anything. During the treatment the doctor will insert a needle underneath the scars and remove the scar tissue that is underneath the surface of the skin.

Punch Excision

This type of acne scar treatment is used on ice pick acne scars and is effective enough to remove them completely. During this treatment the surgeon will use a small ’punch’ device to cut out the scar. After this the edges of the scar will be connected together with a suture. In place of the large scar will be a small line that will be blended into the natural skin around it.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are special treatments that work to control the look of the acne scars by promoting new skin to grow. During this treatment a variety of chemicals are combined into a special solution and poured onto the scars. This will injure the skin and will induce new skin to grow over them. This helps to improve atrophic acne scars – but may not always be effective for other types of acne scars.
