Depending on what part of the country your in you may have a home that is built with either an attic or a basement. Out of the two many people wish for a basement because they are larger and can even be used as a spare room if it is built properly. While the attic may be larger in some homes there are many flaws to it that make it unappealing to many people.

Attics are situated at the top of the house and is surrounded by materials that are used to insulate the home. Often times we are told that this insulation should never touch our skin as it will cause us to break out in a rash. Also as we all know heat rises and during the summer months trying to go up in the attic to put something up we can sweat after only spending one second in it.

Another disadvantage to having an attic is that the only way you are able to access it is through a ‘trap door’ as you might call it. This door is hidden from view and must be pulled down from the ceiling where it hides. As you pull it stairs will unfold – but often time these can be hard to climb because they are not as sturdy and safe as we would hope.

Basements are much better to have because they are located at the bottom of the home. They are often built into the ground and in some homes are considered to be a separate story because it is so large. Some contractors will build finished basements – which means that it may have carpet or some special type of flooring that makes it more livable.

Because it is located at the bottom of the house you will know that it will always be cool. However, during the winter months it might get a little too cold for some people – but this can be easily fixed. All you need to do is make sure to waterproof the exterior basement walls and maybe purchase a portable heater inside to use when needed.
