There are many things that have to be done when moving your home. Many people believe that when you move to a new home in the same city it is much easier – but this is the wrong mindset to have. While there may not be as many moving costs to worry about there are still many things that have to be done.

The first thing that you need to do is notify your landlord that you are moving. It is usually mandatory to notify them a month in advance. This helps to give them time to find someone new to move in so that they do not have to wait a month or two in between tenants.

The next thing you need to do is to start gathering the necessary moving supplies that include boxes, tape, and paper. I find it best to start packing up the house a month in advance in order to make sure that everything gets done in time and you are not doing anything last minute.

Around two weeks before you move you will need to notify your utilities that you are moving and when the cut off day should be. Make sure to set up the new ones and to give them the date you will need them turned on. It would not be helpful to come to a house without any power to it.

You will also need to fill out change of address forms and notify any businesses of your new address. This is an easy process and can often be done online in five minutes. It saves you the time of sitting in line at the post office.

Close to a week before you move it will be time to clean every room in the house. You want to be respectful to your landlord and have a chance at getting that security deposit back. Make sure to clean the carpets, baseboards, and ceiling fans thoroughly.
