There are many things that we take for granted in this world. Usually it is the things that we have and use everyday that we never think about and we never miss until they are gone. To better appreciate them we need to understand what they are and how they work for us.

One of the most common thing that we use everyday and don’t think twice about are light bulbs. Most of us right now are thinking about how basic a light bulb is and wondering why they are so important to us. Stop and think for a moment and try to imagine what it would be like to live in a world without light bulbs.

We would have to read and cook by candlelight and we wouldn’t have been able to create some of the things we love to use – like our television. There are three common types of light bulbs that the majority of people will use. They are; fluorescent bulbs, incandescent bulbs, and energy saving bulbs.

Fluorescent Bulbs

Fluorescent light bulbs are a gas discharge type that will utilize electricity to stir up vapors of mercury. The atoms contained in the mercury when shaken will begin to produce short wave ultraviolet light that creates a fluoresce kind of light that people can see. In order to properly allow the electricity and light to spread throughout the whole bulb it is built with a ballast.

Incandescent Bulbs

These types are powered through the use of incandescence – also known as heat driven light emissions. The incandescent light bulbs work when an electric current travels through a small filament to heat it until there is light. The bulb is closed tightly to keep oxygen from passing inside and bursting it.

Energy Saving Bulbs

Energy saving light bulbs are commonly referred to as compact fluorescent bulbs. These were designed more recently to replace the standard fluorescent bulbs. These type of light bulbs offer the same amount of light – but they use less in electricity and have a much longer life. Although they do cost more to purchase. According to statistics one energy saving bulb can save you $30 in what you spend in electricity.

They offer a wider light spectrum through the use of improved formulations of phosphor. This helps to improve the color that is emitted and to offer a brighter and more softer white.
