Vacations are the time we use to spend time with our family. You know the time you missed out on while each of you were running to work, to school, and to your respective friends’ house. It is a time for families to come together, make memories, and truly get to know each other.

But vacations that are not planned out properly will only turn into disasters and instead of relaxing you will all be stressing out and snapping at each other. I have been on countless vacations and while most were good there were some in which mistakes were made – but lessons were also learned. From these mistakes I have learned what to do and what not to do and am sharing these great ideas with you.

Agree On A Destination

When the children are young it is easy to pick out a destination that they will love. You know that theme parks are always the safest bet and historical cities are something to stay away from. As your child gets older let them have a say in where to go. You can come up with a few ideas and the whole family can decide by majority vote or even a consensus. When all else fails be spontaneous and throw everyone’s (reasonable) ideas into a hat. The first one picked is where you will go.

Plan Ahead

This is something that I cannot stress enough to people! Planning is key to a successful and fun trip. It also helps you to stay organized even if something does go wrong. This means that you need to have back up plans or ideas. I remember spending the first day of one of my vacations on the side of the road after our car and then the rental car broke down on us. The funny thing was the last one broke down about 1 mile from our destination!

Accommodations

Finding a place to stay is important if you are going somewhere that doesn’t include spending time with extended family. Hotels are always a safe bet just make sure that they are safe and in the general areas that you want to visit. One great thing you can do is rent a home for the week. Kiawah Island and Big Bear Lake have great cabins and homes that are big enough for large and small families. Just make sure that you secure your Big Bear vacation rental ahead of time.
