When we enter high school all we can think about is how we have crossed into the teenage world and how we can be popular in our school or what kind of friends we can make. Our parents and teachers are thinking about what type of career we are going to pursue and how they can start making the steps to accomplishing this goal.

How many of us actually know what we want to do when we are in ninth grade? There are some of us that don’t even know when we are graduating from high school. Having a career is important because it is how we are going to make a living for ourselves. It gives us something to strive for and a way to provide for ourselves and the family we will have in the future.

The question that many young people ask is when they should go to college. If they don’t know what they want to do should they still spend the thousands of dollars to attend college? Many parents will encourage them to do this and might even tell them to pursue a more basic degree like business management – which can be used at almost any job.

However, it is up to you to decide if this is the move you want to make. If you do not yet know what you want to do than why spend eight hours in classes. This is especially difficult when you have a full or part time job on the side. Instead focus on what interests you.

Make a list of the jobs that you have thought about over the years and why they interest you. Understand what type of schooling you need for each one, how much you will make, and what benefits it can bring to your life. You can use a career placement test to get an idea of what skills you have and how they can help you to succeed.
