There are dozens of sports that require physical contact – but none more so than martial arts. Some people may disagree and feel that boxing or wrestling holds more physical contact and offers more technique for the fighters performing. But in this day and age boxing has diminished and wrestling has been turned into a shambles full of drama and on stage humiliation and fake fighting.

Taking the place of both of these is something that is still fairly new and something that is growing ever more popular in society – MMA. MMA – also known as mixed martial arts – is a new type of fighting and has taken off in so many countries. The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is the largest supporter for MMA and holds several competitions for it every year with countless fighters. Even a few top fighters from boxing are trying their hands at MMA to see how well they can do.

MMA combines the art of several different types of martial arts for fighters to use. In one fight you could see fighters using wrestling, judo, Muay Thai kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The MMA fighters will battle it out using techniques from these different forms of fighting inside of an eight sided cage. The only way you will win is to knock out your opponent, force them to tap out using a submission, or to win by the decision of the judges.

The fighters will go at each other for three, five minute rounds in which time the judges would watch and decide who won if no one was knocked out or tapped out. The title fights are five, five minute rounds. The fights can brutal though referees make sure to stop it if one fighter is no longer able to defend themselves. This avoids any serious damage to either fighter.

Training for an MMA fight requires hours of dedication and practice. It may take years for someone to learn the many techniques and how to apply it to fighting. They will start off as amateurs and slowly work their way up to pro fighters. They use special fight gear that include special training gloves and Everlast MMA gloves. These gloves are designed in such a way to allow the fighters to use their hands to grab their opponent and perform a submission on them without being restricted.
