People who have dogs will have a pet door installed in their house. This makes it easy for them to put their pup in and out of the home in order to go to the bathroom and to run off energy without having to go with them. It makes it a whole lot easier for the owner and the pet enjoys the freedom they are given.

Regrettably these doors can prove to be a safety danger to your home. Intruders search for openings like this and will use it to their advantage. If you are not utilizing the proper type of door you may be giving them an easy in and putting your family in danger.

Size

If you have a small dog than you don’t have anything to trouble about. In most cases you bought a small door to match the size of the pup and there is no way anyone has the ability to crawl through it. Those with larger dogs are in trouble. The trick is to not go overboard. Simply buy something that your dog is able to put his back and shoulders through.

Location

If you have a fenced in backyard than the back door is the easiest place to set it. With the fence there the intruders will not know it is there. If the yard is not fenced in than you should try to set it on the side of the home, in a window, or put it in a wall. The trick is to keep it away from people driving or walking by the house.

You also need to make sure that the pet door is not too high off the ground or too close to one side of the door. Keep it two inches away from the floor and in the center of the door. This keeps the intruder from putting their hands through and unlocking the door.
