Gas prices are soaring and you are worried because you are driving around in an SUV. You have good reason to worry. SUVs are one of the biggest gas guzzlers on the market – besides sports cars. You gas up on Monday and next thing you know it is time to fill her up again two days later.

The moment gas prices started to increase last year I traded in my Dodge Durango. As much as I loved the car I knew that it was time to get a smaller car with good gas mileage. Unfortunately not everyone has the ability to do that. They have to make do with what they have and try to find other means of saving money.

The good thing is you can always save money by improving the gas mileage on your car. What most people don’t realize is that they often control the gas mileage on their car and how fast they go through it by the way that they drive. There are a few simple steps that you can take that will help to save you from gassing up your car as often and therefore saving you necessary money.

The first thing that you can do to improve gas mileage is to stop racing to your destination. Many of us drive like maniacs on the road and think that if we don’t rush and speed to our next destination we are going to be late. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and drive normally. Follow the speed limit and try not to play with others on the road.

A good way to improve your driving and gas mileage is to stop accelerating so fast. Instead of stomping on the gas the minute you see the green light slowly press down. Ease your way up to the speed limit and you will save yourself tons of gas. I used to drive like this and would constantly wonder how I went through gas so fast. Not only should you accelerate slowly – but you should also brake slowly. Those who brake quickly and brake often will go through their gas much quicker.

With that being said try avoiding high areas of traffic. Most people think that if they take the highway every time they are going to use their gas much quicker because the speeds are higher. However, sitting in traffic and constantly braking and accelerating every five minutes is going to burn through your gas much quicker. You can greatly improve gas mileage if you skip the traffic and get on the highway. Just remember to accelerate slowly when you first get on.

Possibly one of the best advice I could give you is to walk to different places. Walking is great exercise and if your destination is close why not take a walk instead? Instead of taking your car to go on your lunch break choose something nearby and walk there. Not only will you save gas – but you will have a healthier lifestyle.
