For some people their skin is sensitive and there can be many problems associated with it. One of these most common problems are stretch marks. These marks form on the surface of the skin and is considered to be a type of scarring that is caused when the dermis of the skin has been stretched and torn.

Over a period of time the scarring will diminish and for many people will lighten up. There are different treatments that people are able to use – which will help them to remove them or at least to lessen their appearance much quicker. But in order to know what they are and how to treat them you must be able to identify them and understand what causes them.

Stretch marks can be caused by many different things that we do. It is often the result of the skin stretching due to rapid weight loss or weight gain, exercise, and hormonal changes within the body. Each of these things can cause the elasticity in the dermis or the surface layer of the skin to break and the skin to stretch beyond what is normal.

Pregnant women are the most vulnerable of these marks because their bellies are growing and stretching at a fast pace in order to hold the baby. Other people might also have them in their inner thighs, inner arms, underarms, buttocks, hips, and breasts. Most men will have stretch marks in their inner arms due to the amount of muscle building that they are doing.

The best way to recognize these marks is by the purple and reddish lines that they create. Depending on the person and the cause of them these lines can be either thin and small or very large and thick. When you touch them they will not hurt – but will be soft to the touch. Over time they will usually lighten up and become white to blend in with the healthy skin around it.

When you have identified stretch marks on anyplace in your body it would be wise to understand what could be causing them. For some people it might be hereditary and even though they are skinny they may have small amounts of them. One of the best ways to prevent them is to drink lots of water to help improve the elasticity in the skin.
