Colon cancer is considered to be one of the most deathly types of cancers that afflicts hundreds of people each year. What makes it so bad is how hard it is for people to recognize the symptoms and the ability for physicians to catch it when it is in the early stage. When caught too late there is little to nothing that anyone can do to treat it.

One of the best ways that you can learn to spot this disease early is to understand the risk factors. This will help you to know whether you are considered – my medical terms – to be at a high or low risk. If you believe that you are high risk you should have scheduled check ups and screenings planned with your doctor.

Age – Studies show that around 90% of people who have been diagnosed with this condition are fifty years or older. However, it is still possible for younger people to have it – it is just not as common.

Personal History – If you are someone who has been diagnosed with colon cancer and have treated it successfully than you are at a high risk for colon cancer. This is because your body is susceptible to the polyps that occur during this condition and it is very likely it will reoccur.

Intestinal Conditions – There are certain conditions of the intestines that will cause inflammation of the colon. A few of these include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Genetics – There are many conditions that are passed down through genetics and this is one of them. Try to study your family’s history and see if any of them have had colon cancer. If more then one of them have had it then this will increase your risk even more.

Diet – Many health experts believe that the foods that we eat will affect our chances at being diagnosed with this condition. Eating foods that are high in fat and low in fiber are the worst types.

Lifestyle – There are other lifestyle choices that we make which will affect our chances. Many of these colon cancer risk factors include; no exercise, obesity, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol abuse.
