Depression is a very serious mental condition that hundreds if not thousands of people in the world must deal with. Many of us understand what this is like and have suffered through it in our own way. Although it is hard to see someone going through this condition there is a way to help them.

When we think of depression most of us think about adults and maybe even teenagers who have suffered a terrible loss, abuse, or are dealing with very real issues in their life. We never think about the hundreds of young children who are battling with it. It is hard to imagine this because we automatically think that children have carefree thoughts and never worry about anything or even have to.

But there are many children in the United States alone who live in a home where divorce, abuse, and even peer pressure is a very real problem for them. These issues are real to them and can cause them to feel sad, depressed, and even hopeless. It can be difficult for these children to sometimes talk about how they are feelings and so they bottle them in and become worse with time and more despairing.

If you are a parent, sibling, friend, or other type of relative you should learn to recognize the symptoms of childhood depression. They will not understand the need and importance of seeking help and will feel that there is no one they can turn to. Be recognizing the symptoms you will be able to get them the help that they need.

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of interest in activities they once loved
  • Loss in appetite
  • Over eating
  • Are not sociable with people they know
  • Sad
  • Distant
  • Hopeless

One of the best ways that you can treat childhood depression is to find a counselor or therapist that will be able to work with them. They should be someone that they can trust and whom they can talk to when they are having problems. This is more effective than anti-depressants – which can have negative side effects in children. Also make sure that if you are the parent that you make them feel comfortable and show them how much they mean to you.
