In today’s tough economy, or any time for that matter, saving money is paramount. Clipping coupons and shopping for deals on discount goods, like baby cribs, are becoming as important as the money you earned to spend it. With the quality of goods these days, you simply no longer have to overpay for a quality nursery.

As a parent, I can tell you baby items are expensive. Few things are more expensive for your baby room that the crib, and in the past the only way to have quality was to go with a designer brand. This is no longer the case, in fact even no-brand products are being produced in nearly as good of quality as the costlier cribs of years past. With increased safety requirements and improvements comes increased quality, at least when it comes to products manufactured for small children.

When buying a discount baby crib, there’s a few things prospective buyers should look out for. This is just a brief buyer’s guide, of course, but these three basic tips will save you time, money and headache. By keeping a keen eye towards build quality, railing and side safety you can ensure a sound night’s sleep knowing your baby is safe and that you found a bargain for them to sleep tight in.

Build Quality – As mentioned earlier, even a discounted or store brand baby crib will usually be built sturdy and safely – but not always. Be sure to shake the crib and check for stability, especially at the top. Look for loose joints and weak points that may give under pressure. Remember, one morning you’ll wake up with your baby grabbing the top railing and trying to shake it loose.

Railing Safety – The United States has strict rules and guidelines for the construction of your designer or discount baby crib. Whether cheap or expensive they should all comply with railing safety guidelines but as a concerned parent you should always double check. Any verticle slats in the railing should be tight enough so that your baby won’t be able to fit his or her head or body through it. It is recommended there be no gaps larger than 2 3/8 inches apart, anywhere.

Crib Side Safety – Of all crib related injuries, or worse deaths, falling out is the highest contributing cause by far. While you should expect your new crib to meet safety requirements, in some cases it’s you – the parent – who is responsible for keeping your baby safe. This is especially true with convertible baby cribs – those really handy models that convert into a bed. Also, beds that allow you to raise and lower the side railing are of concern. Make sure the locking mechanism is baby proof and secure so that your baby won’t be able to shake it lose or reach it to unlock – remember toddlers and older babies have a knack for figuring things out. Also, always make sure that your baby cannot crawl over the top of the side railing due to the mattress being too high, by standing on a toy or pillow, or because the railing is too low.

Remember, your child’s safety is ultimately in your hands. While you can get a great deal on a discount crib, you need to make sure that it’s completely safe. And, whether it’s cheap, expensive, simple or fancy you need to make absolutely sure it’s stable and your baby cannot fit through or crawl over the side rail. Now, what are you waiting for, go find a great baby crib and a discount price!
