Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that have been used to make certain things. It is mainly used for materials that are used to build brakes for cars, materials for building, and to help fight against corrosion and heat. This group includes; amosite, chrysotile, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos. One or all of these has been altered in a chemical way before being used.

Researchers believe that they can be dangerous to anyone who works with or around them because the fibers from the asbestos can be breathed in. This can cause diseased of the lungs and other vital organs. Unfortunately this severe diseases do not always appear until much later in life from when they were exposed.

In some people it is able to cause scar tissue to back up in their lungs and make it difficult and nearly impossible to breathe. The fibers that can cause these problems are too small for people to see them without microscopes.

Who is at risk? People who smoke are at the greatest risk of developing these diseases. Also people who work un large industries and work or build things that contain products using it are at a great risk. Construction workers can also be exposed to high amounts of the fibers through the building materials that they use each day.

Besides the decrease in lung cancer many health experts believe that asbestos can cause colon cancer. This is an on going study that has not been fully proven – but many believe that it can be caused from drinking tap water and insulation used in the home. Statistics show that 26 out of 2,500 textile workers that used asbestos products died from colon cancer.
